Body Psychotherapy
Body Psychotherapy is a therapeutic framework which says “we experience ourself in, and through, our bodies.”
The goal of all body psychotherapies is to assist people in restoring the natural flow and pulsation of the body since we are in our nature full of vitality, love, creativity and productivity.
You probably know that certain thoughts have dramatic effects on your body. If you recall an embarrassing memory, maybe your shoulders rise, your jaw tightens, your breath shallows, and you feel “low”.
When the experience isn’t just embarrassing, but traumatic, it can express itself in chronic muscular tension in the body, which we call ‘muscular/body armour’.
We attend to both the mind and body, because what is expressed on the outside in the muscular armor is identical to what has happened on the inside. That is to say, psyche (mind) and soma (body) are functionally identical.
Many somatic therapies focus on helping clients regulate their nervous system and develop awareness of bodily sensations.
In addition to regulation and awareness, Body Psychotherapy goes further by working directly with the organisation of the body, emotions, and psychological patterns that shape how a person lives and relates to themselves and others.
